Introduction of Taiwan (by 12th grader)

Winnie Fu – 12th grader

Taiwan is located in the west of the North Pacific Ocean.  It is close to the south-eastern corner of China and sits above the Philippines.  There are 23 million people living in the small island, Formosa, named by Portuguese in the 16th century.  The capital of Taiwan is Taipei whose population density is the highest in Taiwan.  Two or three hundred years ago, people living in Taiwan were the aboriginal.  Then Chinese moved to this island becoming the majority.  We speak the same language as people in China do.  But the Chinese characters we use are different from what they use.  Taiwanese use traditional Chinese characters and Chinese use simplified Chinese characters.  Instead of potatoes and bread in the West, we live on rice and noodles.  However, a lot of Taiwanese love potatoes and bread now.

There are many kinds of cultures in Taiwan.  Before the Spanish and the Dutch occupied Taiwan, there had lived the native for hundreds of years.  Then a large number of Chinese moved to Taiwan.  Since the end of the 19th century, Japan had occupied Taiwan for 50 years.  After WWII, another wave of Chinese moved in.  As time went by, different cultures were combin3ed and came out a so-called Taiwanese culture.

It seems that Taiwan has it own culture.  But most of the Taiwanese culture is originated from Chinese culture.  For example, a lot of Taiwanese still use Chinese lunar calendar which is very useful for weather forecast and farmers.  Another example is Chinese New Year.  It is very important to Taiwanese and Chinese.  Many Taiwanese and Chinese believe in Buddhism and Daoism.  But there are still other people believing in Catholic and Christianity.

Taiwan is a beautiful island which has a variety of history, food, and culture.  Hope everyone from all around the world who comes to Taiwan have a nice vocation and a wonderful memory here.

Taiwan is located in the west of the North Pacific Ocean.  It is close to the south-eastern region of China and sits above the Philippines.  There are 23 million people living in the small island, Formosa, named by Portuguese in the 16th century.  The capital of Taiwan is Taipei whose population density is the highest in Taiwan.  Hundreds of years ago, people living in Taiwan were the aboriginal inhabitants.  Then, Chinese moved to this island becoming the majority.  Nowadays, their descendants, we, Taiwanese, speak the same language as people in China do.  But the Chinese characters we use are different from what they use.  Traditional Chinese characters are used in Taiwan while Simplified Chinese characters are used in China.  As for food, instead of potatoes and bread in the West, we mainly live on rice and noodles.  However, more and more people in Taiwan love potatoes and bread now because of westernization.

There are a variety of cultures in Taiwan.  Before the Spanish and the Dutch occupied Taiwan, there had lived the native for hundreds of years.  About three or four hundred years ago, waves of Chinese moved to Taiwan.  Since the end of the 19th century, Japan had occupied Taiwan for 50 years.  After WWII, another wave of Chinese moved in.  As time went by, different cultures were combined, and coming out in this small island is a so-called Taiwanese culture.

It seems that Taiwan has its own culture.  But most of the Taiwanese culture is originated from Chinese culture.  For example, as the ancestors did, a lot of Taiwanese still use Chinese lunar calendar which is very useful for weather forecast and farmers.  Another example is Chinese New Year.  Whether you are Taiwanese or Chinese, all of them will get together to have a family reunion dinner.  Many Taiwanese and Chinese believe in Buddhism and Daoism.  So, various temples are dotted in small towns and big cities.  But there are still many people believing in Catholic, Christianity, and Islam.

Taiwan is a beautiful island which has colorful and marvelous history and cultures.  What's more, there are unmissable foods at different kinds of restaurants and localized night markets.  Hope everyone from all around the world who comes to Taiwan has a nice vocation and a wonderful memory here.
