Valentine’s Day (by 12th grader)

Nowadays, Valentine’s Day has played an important role for lovers, friends, and families.  People show others their sincere love and feelings by letters or gifts, or having a date with their lovers.  However, the origin of the festival wasn’t that happy as it seems like.  Instead, there was a sad story behind this festival.  There was a story about Saint Valentine of Rome’s imprisonment for performing wedding for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians persecuted by the Roman Empire.  At the end, Saint Valentine was put to death on 2/14, and this is why we celebrate Valentine’s Day on 2/14.

Besides, there are many difference between the way how people celebrate in each country, and some of them even gives rise to several derivative festivals.  Take Japan and Korea for instance.  In Japan, those who receive gifts from their lovers will resend a gift on 3/14, which is called “White Day.”  As for Korea, those in black who failed on 2/14 or 3/14 will drink black coffee and black noodles together on 4/14, hoping to be winners in the following year.  Next time, if you don’t have any plan on Valentine’s Day, why don’t try to follow other countries’ way?

Nowadays, Valentine’s Day has played an important role for lovers, friends, and families.  People show their beloved sincere love and feelings by letters or gifts, or have a date with their lovers.  However, the origin of the festival wasn’t that happy as it appears now.  Instead, there was a sad story behind this festival.  The story was about Saint Valentine who performed wedding for soldiers forbidden to marry and ministered to Christians persecuted by the Roman Empire.  At the end, Saint Valentine was put to death on February 14th, and this is why we celebrate on the date in honor of Saint Valentine.

Besides, there are many different ways for people to celebrate the festival in some countries, and some of them even give rise to several derivative festivals.  Take Japan and Korea for instance.  In Japan, those who receive gifts from their lovers will send gifts in return on March 14th, which is called “White Day.”  As for Korea, those in black who failed on February 14th or March 14th will drink black coffee, eat black noodles together on April 14th, called “Black Day,” to encourage each other, and look forward to being winners in the following year.  In Taiwan, celebrating Valentine’s Day is popular.  But I seldom hear people have celebration activities on “White Day,” let alone “Black Day.”  As for me, I hope to be a participant next year to enjoy the atmosphere of Valentine’s Day and have fun.
