Two Separated Schools 男校 女校 (by Freshman)

Brian – Freshman

It is a common circumstance in Taiwan that boys and girls attend seperate schools. When students enter senior high school, in order to concentrate on academy, not to be distracted by dating, they are separated into two types of school according to gender. This phenomenon can date back to long longtime ago. In ancient times, gender equality has not appeared yet. Therefore, those who could study were the male. However, when it comes to The First World War, the concept of gender equality started to spread all over the world and, thus, people established schools for the female in addition to let women get educated.

Yet, this situation has continued owing to a conservative thought. Students should focus on studying and some of the parents regard that dating would make students' academic performance worse. Hence, the best way to avoid dating is to let the boys and girls be separated in two different schools. In my opinion, this thought is totally ridiculous and outdated. Since it is the age of information, cellphones, computers, and the Internet are widely used. Students can have a lot of ways to know each other and make friends with the opposite sex. What's worse, those who meet each other on the Internet are more complicated. In other words, they can come from different places, doing different jobs in the society and they are not as pure as school students. As a result, it is easy for students to go astray when those guys are their friends. That is why I don't agree with the thought about attending separate schools for boys and girls.

Two Separated Schools 男校 女校 (by Freshman)

I don’t agree that boys and girls attend two separated schools.

It is very common in Taiwan that boys and girls attend two separated schools. When students enter senior high school, in order to concentrate on academic study, and not to be distracted by the attraction of the opposite sex, they are separated into two types of school according to gender. This phenomenon can date back to long time ago.  In ancient times, the society was dominated by the male.  There was no gender equality.  Therefore, those who could study at school or be tutored at home were the male.  However, after WWI, the concept of gender equality started to spread all over the world and, thus, people established schools for girls and let them get educated as boys did.  Two separated schools came into being.

The state of two separate schools has continued owing to a conservative thought. Students should focus on studying and some parents even think that dating with the opposite sex will make their children’s performance at school become poor.  Hence, the best way to avoid that is to let boys and girls study at two separated schools.  In my opinion, this thought is totally ridiculous and outdated.  Since it is the age of information, cellphones, computers, and the Internet can be used as the ways to communicate with each other intensively, and make friends with the opposite sex easily.  It is more likely to occur that communication and friendship via the Internet will become more complicated and even put boys and girls at risk since strangers are from the four walks of life and not as simple and pure as students at school.  As a result, it is possible and easy for students to go astray when evil guys are their friends.

As I said at the beginning, I don’t agree that boys and girls attend two separated schools.  A mixed school can be treated as a small society in which boys and girls can learn lots of things from studying, activities, competition, and teamwork.  As a result, they’ll become more mature and responsible.
