On the day of the trial, the Ewells and Tom had a completely different version of stories.  The Ewells said that Tom sexually assaulted Mayella, while Tom said Mayella seduced him and after Mr. Ewell came home he just ran away.  After hearing both testimonies, the sheriff pointed out that her injuries must have been caused by a left handy, for her bruise was on her right cheek.  And Tom’s left hand had been handicapped for a long time.  That meant Tom __7__ then, Mr. Finch asked Mr. Ewell to write down his name.  To the audience’s surprise, Mr. Ewell wrote down his name instinctively using his left hand.  At that moment, the truth was revealed.

To the despair of Atticus, even though the evidence was rock-hard, Tom was still found guilty by a jury consisting of white people.  Jem and Scout __8__ the trial, but the result was devastated for them.

Nevertheless, there was still hope for Maycomb.  Atticus noticed that the jury had spent a few hours deliberating the verdict, while in the past, it only took them a few minutes to find a black man guilty.  Although it didn’t count as a victory, the hesitation and delay definitely represented progress and positive change.
