學測指考英文寫作 – Haste Makes Waste

Haste Makes Waste (by 7th grader)

It was a sunny afternoon.  When it was time to go home after school, I rushed out classroom and ran along the street quickly.  Today, my favorite cartoon would have a new episode.  I was so excited that I couldn’t wait to watch it.  So, when I came back home, I finished all of my homework within 30 minutes.  Then, I took a can of Coke out of the refrigerator, turning on the TV, and start to enjoy the plot with a comfortable posture.

“Come here!” ten minutes later, I heard Mom call me from the kitchen.  “Today is your sister’s birthday, but we don’t have enough sugar to make a cake,” she said.  “Don’t be a couch potato.  Go to the supermarket and buy some sugar,” she took some cash out of her purse and gave it to me.  I didn’t want to miss any details of the marvelous plot, but I had no choice but to leave the TV reluctantly in order to buy the sugar.  “I would come back soon without missing any important part,” I said to myself, and ran as fast as I could to the supermarket.

In the supermarket, some people were shopping, some people were lining up for checking out at the counter.  Luckily, there wasn’t many people.  I scanned the shelves and found what I need immediately, a bag of white powder which just looked like sugar.  I grabbed it without second thought, paying for it, and going back directly.

Tragically, I didn’t notice what I had bought exactly.  That night, after singing the “Happy Birthday song,” for my sister, we cut the wonderful-looking strawberry cake.  As I put it into my mouth, I noticed something strange – the cake was salty!  I realized that the thing I bought was actually salt, not sugar.  I learned a lesson from this experience – Haste makes waste.

Today was Tuesday.  Every Tuesday, my favorite cartoon would have a new episode.  I was so excited that I couldn’t wait to watch it.  After school, I rushed out of the classroom and ran along the street back to home very quickly.  Upon finishing all of my homework within 30 minutes, I took a can of Coke from the refrigerator, sitting on the sofa comfortably, turning on the TV, and starting to enjoy the new episode.

To my surprise, ten minutes later, Mom called me from the kitchen, “Julie, come here!”  “Today is your sister’s birthday.  I plan to make a cake, but I ran out of sugar,” she said, “Don’t be a couch potato.  Go fetch a bag of sugar from the nearby supermarket.” Then she gave me money.  I had no choice but to follow her instruction to buy sugar.  I left the TV on because I would come back within five minutes not to miss any part of this episode.

There weren’t too many shoppers in the supermarket.  Some were in the local produce section, some are in the dairy and meat section, and still some stood in the line to check out at the counter.  I looked over shelf by shelf and found bags of white powder piled up on a shelf which just looked like sugar.  Grabbing one without a second thought and not taking a close look at what it was inside, I paid for it and running home directly.

That evening, after singing the “Happy Birthday song,” to my sister, Mom cut the wonderful-looking strawberry cake into several pieces.  As I put one piece into my mouth, it tasted quite strange – the cake was salty!  Almost at the same time, Mom, Dad and my sister spat the cake out in disgust.  Of course, I was blamed for my carelessness and negligence because what I bought was salt instead of sugar.  Moreover, my sister was not very happy since I ruined her birthday cake.  That night, lying on the bed, I totally understood the meaning of an old saying – Haste makes waste.
