Everyone has their own opinion about food, there’s no way you can go online without coming across someone’s review of a restaurant or food stand.  But to a linguist like me, __1__ reviews just about restaurant.  The words we use when we write our comments are deeply affected by our __2__ status.

By our study, we found people use language of trauma when they are grading a “1-star” review.  Like other trauma victims, they tend to use pronouns like “we” or “us” to emphasize a shared sense of grief.  Solitary terrible reviews also have the same tendency.  They often stated “we were ignored” or “they yelled at us”.  These reviews are not judging the bad food but rather a __3__ for dealing with minor trauma caused by face-to-face __4__.

However, while we are studying positive reviews of an expensive restaurant, we found that writers tend to use __5__ of __6__ pleasure to describe the food.  They also like to use sophisticated words to show people that they are well educated.  On the other hand, positive cheap restaurant like to use metaphors of __7__ to describe their food.  These reviews talk about food as an addiction.  Writers put their blame on food when they are feeling guilty for eating them.  By doing this, they are distancing themselves from their own “sin”.

Also, menu language has a high correlation with their price range.  It is so instructive that we can predict prices just from the words on the menu.  Shorter and more implicit words are use in higher class restaurants, while positive but __8__ words are used to describe cheaper restaurants.
